I often come up with the titles after a painting is finished. I enjoy this part of the process because a title can add new layers of meaning and open up the work to broader interpretations. I see this as a part of the creative process as much as painting itself.
This World Outgrew Me is painted on a piece of cardboard that was part of some artist materials I got from an artist whose studio I took over. She must have been priming a piece of canvas on it because the surface had a pattern of small dots of paint in vertical and horizontal lines. It made the cardboard look like a canvas, but with a different, more matt quality. Here and there, strands of canvas are stuck in the paint, and I decided to leave those details in and let them become a part of my composition. The title, This World Outgrew Me refers to the notion of not belonging and you spend as much time thinking about the past as you do on thinking about the future.
