Tinplate 2 Bensalem — in the Pacific Ocean close to Solomon Island, mapped by Francis Bacon 1657. 220 cm diameter.

The tin plates take their inspiration from islands in The Dictionary of Imaginary Places by Alberto Manguel and Gianni Guadalupi. Full-scale charcoal drawings are mirrored onto the backs of cut-out metal plates. The plates are then heated with a power hammer before being manually worked with lead-filled wooden mallets of various sizes.

Bensalem. An island in the southern Pacific Ocean near the Solomon Islands. It's circumference is approximately 900 km, which is just under two-thirds the size of Ireland. Despite being isolated from the outside world for a long time, it was already mentioned in antiquity. It was regularly visited by ships from Tyre, Carthage, China, and Atlantis. During the 2000s BCE, the island was a thriving trade hub. However, as the art of navigation declined following the fall of Atlantis, the island became increasingly secluded. This process was completed in the 4th century BCE when Bensalem’s king, Solamona, decided to sever all connections with the outside world and prohibited foreign travel. Visitors are received warmly but must first undergo a three-day quarantine. They are accommodated in a spacious building called the House of Strangers, constructed of blue brick and adorned with large hand-painted windows. Visitors are not allowed to travel more than 5 km from the capital without an escort or special permission. The island was first thoroughly described and mapped in 1627 by Francis Bacon.

Bensalem.
