After finishing a series of Complexity paintings in 2002, I began a series of black-and-white line drawings of mechanical objects but had pushed my distortion technique to the brink. I began to allow the lines to overlap, opening up the process of composition. I began to twist the object (a microscope) as I drew distorted versions of its contours, offering the viewer an all-around perspective. Various materials on the object were signified by unique colours, and the drawings became paintings. I incorporated complex colour blending systems into this series – different colour themes represented respective overlapping elements. One painting in this series took nearly two years to complete. What one sees or doesn’t see in these paintings is irrelevant; it’s the complex interactions on multiple levels at the same time that make these works visually stimulating. The final work in this series was completed in 2009.
