Heavy with History in Light Materials. Helsing describes himself as an artist who weaves. By experimenting with weaving techniques, he aims to create his own unique expression for woven images. His weavings extend into the space to demonstrate the ability of woven textiles to function as both pictorial and sculptural objects. Heavy by History, Odenplan display case: with this title, Helsing wants to convey that the materials surrounding us carry their own histories, which give them weight. "Objects are sticky; they cling, history clings to objects, history weighs them down, slows them down, makes them sluggish," he explains. The history of weaving oscillates between utility and art. In Gustaf Helsing’s weavings, the motifs are layered like sediment, pointing both forward and backward in time. He wants to highlight the versatility of the past and its potential for change.
