Tinplate 10 — Luggnagg

Luggnagg. A large island located 260 nautical miles southeast of Japan. Its capital is Traldragdub. From the port city of Clumegnig, there is vibrant trade, including with Japan. Luggnagg is known for its hospitality, with the state often covering both food and lodging. The island is perhaps most famous for its Struldbruggs, or "immortals." These are children born with a small red spot above their left eyebrow, which according to the Luggnaggian people is a sign of immortality. The spot changes over time, first turning green, then darkening, and eventually becoming black. There are an estimated 1,100 Struldbruggs on Luggnagg. Their lives are similar to other people's until they reach the age of 80. After that, the aging process slows down, and they live on forever. When a Struldbrugg reaches 80, they are cast out of society and considered dead. If a marriage is formed between two Struldbruggs, it is dissolved once one reaches this age. This is done to prevent the Struldbruggs from being burdened by both eternal life and an eternal marriage. The island was charted around 1699 by the ship’s doctor and later sea captain, Lemuel Gulliver.

Luggnagg.
