Alcina. The island is about the size of Sicily. It is named after a princess. According to some travelers, the island lies near the coast of Japan, while others believe it is located in the Caribbean Sea. The forests in the southeast of the island are dominated by citrus, cedar, palm, and large areas of laurel trees. Rich deposits of myrtle spread across the meadows and plains west of the inland's low hills. Long, bloody civil wars broke out when the three princesses, Alcina, Morgana, and Logistilla, divided the kingdom after their father's death. The island was first described by the French military man Ruggiero in 1735 and mapped by Ludovico Ariosto in 1516.
