Heavenly Perspective alludes to the divine point of view. The paintings are symbolic landscapes, seen from above and at a certain distance. The topographical visual language symbolizes life on earth and the everyday. The shimmer, which lies like a veil over the paintings, represents the transcendental and the solemn.
The series is intended as a kind of memento mori—a reminder to take a step back from daily life and celebrate the wonder of living. The gaze is still directed downward, toward the earth. Art can be (for both artist and viewer) a meditative vessel for seeing beyond all obligations. That is what I aim to achieve with the series Heavenly Perspective.
I start by wrinkling the canvas and then spraypainting it. This part of the process is very improvisational. I proceed by stretching the canvas and applying a layer of rabbit glue. This stretches the canvas and makes it totally flat but keeps the illusion of depth.
The layer of rabbit glue creates a shimmering effect under the right lighting conditions. See that effect here: https://vimeo.com/390713941
