The Kitchen Was Rustic

In The Kitchen Was Rustic, a snake is being ground in a meat grinder on the kitchen table, surrounded by mushrooms, a sliced watermelon, and a hare. The painting unfolds like a quiet experiment: Mauritzson adds objects, animals, and gestures intuitively, asking herself “What happens here?” and letting the scene grow over time. Everyday items collide with surreal touches, creating a space where the familiar and the unexpected coexist. Through this process, the domestic interior becomes a stage for small, uncanny dramas. The notion of “forever” is subtly questioned — permanence exists only in the immediacy of presence, never as a guarantee.
