They Wish They Had a River

Every year, the lake by Mauritzson’s family home freezes, and the family walks down to ice skate. In They Wish They Had a River, Mauritzson captures these lived moments, combining memories with personal objects that are not always tied to a specific event into a single, cohesive scene. Friends and family appear as they are remembered, contributing to a collage of experiences rather than a literal depiction of a particular moment. She is fascinated by the aspects of life that endure: family, shared rituals, and the memories that accumulate over time. Her paintings do not aim to fix these moments, but to bring them into the present, allowing the viewer to feel the passage of time and the quiet persistence of what matters most.
