In the first triptych, the negotiating table is central. It evokes the political agreements that have shaped the history of the islands, not least the agreement concerning Åland’s demilitarization and neutralization during the Second World War. The table becomes a site of decisions, compromises, and power—but also of the absence of those affected by those decisions. The concrete historical event opens onto broader questions of territory, sovereignty, and humanity’s ability to influence its surroundings.
