Matilda Kästel Swedish, b. 1984
In the spring of 2020, I sat in my studio with no idea of what to do. All exhibitions and commissions had been canceled due to the pandemic, and any new objects didn’t really have a destination. I mostly read the news, and everything was at a standstill. Somewhere in the flow, an article about pangolins appeared, that they are considered a delicacy and are poached for both their meat and their scales which are believed to have medicinal properties. To save time, they are boiled alive so that the skin becomes easier to remove. The same article mentioned that the pangolin was suspected of being a host for the transmission of the coronavirus to humans. It was a cruel irony that our behaviour would punish us in such an immediate way. My pangolin has been given a trapeze on which it hangs, entertained and carefree about the state of the world.
