Concert: Trio Perenne
We warmly invite you to an afternoon where music and contemporary art meet in unexpected and inspiring ways. Please join us on Sunday, September 20, at 3 pm for a live performance by acclaimed musicians Sara Hammarström (flutist), Kim Hellgren (violist), and Lisa Viguier Vallgårda (harpist).

The concert will be presented in dialogue with Mattias Åkeson’s exhibition Kom & Gå, and will take place on the final day of the exhibition. It also marks the last concert at our current space on Hudiksvallsgatan 6, making it a particularly special occasion for us as we prepare to move the gallery to our new home at Gävlegatan 10B.
Programme
The programme consists of Matthew Whittall's The City in the Sea (2017), Johannes Jansson's Studie (2023), and Claude Debussy's Sonate pour flûte, alto et harpe (1915).
Trio Perenne consists of flutist Sara Hammarström, violist Kim Hellgren, and harpist Lisa Viguier Vallgårda. Sara Hammarström studied the flute in Stockholm, Glasgow, Paris, and Cologne. She is a member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble neo and is principal flute of the Västerås Sinfonietta. Kim Hellgren studied the viola at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm/Edsberg and at Indiana University in the United States. After completing her studies, she joined the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and was a member of Norrbotten Neo for many years. Lisa Viguier Vallgårda was born in Bordeaux, France. She studied the harp with Pierre Jamet and at the Conservatoire de Paris. Since 1993, she has been principal harpist of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Matthew Whittall is a Canadian-Finnish composer who is based in Helsinki, Finland. His work The City in the Sea was inspired by the famous poem of the same name by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The poem describes a dark, melancholic, and haunting vision of a city that has sunk into the depths of death and the sea. Whittall's composition draws inspiration from Poe's imagery, including the following lines from the poem:
"…light from out the lurid sea
Streams up the turrets silently
(…)
Up many and many a marvelous shrine
Whose wreathed friezes intertwine
The viol, the violet and the vine."
Johannes Jansson is a Swedish composer who studied composition with, among others, Sten Broman and Ingvar Lidholm. Since the 1980s, his works have been performed regularly by all of Sweden's major orchestras. Jansson has expressed a desire to write music that is "so beautiful that it breaks down all resistance." Studie was composed specifically for Sara Hammarström, Lisa Viguier Vallgårda, and Kim Hellgren. It is also the piece that brought the three musicians together and led to the formation of Trio Perenne.
Claude Debussy's trio for flute, viola, and harp is the first of three later sonatas that he composed during the First World War, when he was seriously ill. The music moves away from the rich and fluid soundscapes of his earlier works and instead makes use of more stripped-down harmonies, sudden changes of mood, and fragmented musical motifs. The sonata is particularly well known for its unusual combination of flute, viola, and harp. Its distinctive instrumentation has subsequently inspired other composers to write music for this same combination of instruments.
