Sophögen
Sophögen i Oxyrhynchos, som grävdes ut av europeiska arkeologer under första hälften av 1900-talet, visade sig rymma enorma skatter: I Sophögen hittades brev, orakelfrågor, dikter, polisrapporter, besvärjelser, komihåglappar, teaterbiljetter och allt annat som invånarna i staden en gång brukat och sen slängt – för över 2000 år sedan.
Texterna tar nu plats i ett gränsöverskridande verk för 29 röster, ljudskulptur, skådespelare, musiker och dockor på Orionteatern.
Sophögen är öppen från 30 augusti till 14 september 2025.
Entrébiljetten (190 kr) gäller en hel dag och publiken är välkommen att komma och gå som den önskar. Under de sista 4 timmarna varje dag uppstår i rummet spelade scener och tablåer med skådespelare, musiker och dockor. Trots att allt som idag återstår av själva staden är några husgrunder och en pelare, så är Oxyrhynchos tack vare sin Sophög antikens bäst bevarade stad.

The Heap
Outside an abandoned city, in 1897, the largest garbage heap of antiquity was discovered. The 9-meter-deep mound turned out to contain hundreds of thousands of papyrus fragments with texts bearing traces of everyday life in the city 2,000 years ago. These texts are now being brought to life in an innovative and cross-disciplinary production at Orionteatern.
The garbage heap in Oxyrhynchus, excavated by European archaeologists during the first half of the 20th century, turned out to contain enormous treasures: letters, oracle questions, poems, police reports, spells, reminders, theatre tickets—everything the city’s inhabitants once used and then threw away—over 2,000 years ago.
These texts now take center stage in a transdisciplinary work for 29 voices, sound sculpture, actors, musicians, and puppets at Orionteatern.
The Garbage Heap is open from August 30 to September 14, 2025.
Admission (190 SEK) is valid for a full day, and visitors are welcome to come and go as they please. During the final four hours of each day, scenes and tableaux with actors, musicians, and puppets unfold in the space. Although all that remains of the actual city today are a few house foundations and a column, Oxyrhynchus is, thanks to its garbage heap, the best-preserved city of antiquity.
