As more and more aspects of our lives are measured and evaluated, where are the limits of endurance?
We are pleased to begin our fall season with Mattias Åkeson’s first exhibition with the gallery.
For an extended period, Mattias Åkeson has been developing a series of works that examine the systems and structures shaping contemporary working life, and more broadly, how they permeate everyday existence. As increasing aspects of our lives are measured, tracked, and evaluated, what impact does this have on us? Where are the limits of endurance? When does the final measurement take place, or the last survey get completed? Is there a point at which no further improvement is possible?
The exhibition’s title, Come & Go (Kom & Gå), is drawn from the digital time-tracking systems commonly used in municipal workplaces to record employees’ working hours.
The film is set in an abandoned office landscape, where a group of elderly figures remain suspended in a loop, a continuous cycle of repetition. Its script is a text collage by writer Mattias Hagberg, composed from fragments of workplace health and safety documents and inspection reports.
Coinciding with the exhibition is the publication of a book of the same title. Also a collaboration between Mattias Hagberg and Mattias Åkeson, the book includes documentation of the exhibition, a conversation between Mattias Åkeson and Johanna Billing about the film, as well as an essay on idleness by Mattias Hagberg.
The artistic practice of Mattias Åkeson is grounded in an interest in the relationship between society, the individual, and the collective. His work takes an investigative approach to place, function, relationships, time, and space. Working from ideas rather than medium, he moves across photography, video, sculpture, drawing, and painting.
Mattias Hagberg is a cultural journalist, author, and Senior Lecturer in Literary Composition at the University of Gothenburg. For many years, he has worked at the intersection of fiction, essay writing, and scholarly inquiry.

Vi är glada att inleda vår höstsäsong med Mattias Åkesons första utställning med galleriet.
Mattias Åkeson har under en längre tid arbetat med en serie konstverk om de strukturer och mekanismer som idag är en del av våra arbetsliv, men som också är en del av vår tillvaro i stort. När allt fler delar av våra liv mäts och utvärderas, vad gör det då med oss då? När passeras vi gränsen för vad vi klarar av? När är den sista mätningen gjord, den sista enkäten ifylld? Finns det en punkt när ingenting längre kan förbättras? Titeln Kom & gå kommer från det digitala verktyg som många kommunala arbetsplatser använder sig av för att registrera arbetstid.
Utställningens film utspelar sig i ett övergivet kontorslandskap där en grupp äldre människor blivit kvar i en loop, ett pågående upprepande flöde. Manus är ett textkollage av författaren Mattias Hagberg som bygger på fragment från arbetsmiljödokument och skyddsronder.
Till utställningen släpps också en bok med samma namn som utställningen. Boken är även den ett samarbete mellan Mattias Hagberg och Mattias Åkeson, och rymmer, förutom en dokumentation av utställningen, ett samtal om filmen mellan Mattias Åkeson och Johanna Billing, samt en essä om lättja av Mattias Hagberg.
Mattias Åkesons konstnärliga arbete bygger på ett intresse för relationen mellan samhälle, individ och kollektiv. Konstnärskapet förhåller sig på ett undersökande vis till plats, funktion, relation, tid och rum. Han arbetar idébaserat och tvärmedialt med foto, video, skulptur, teckning och måleri.
Mattias Hagberg, som är kulturjournalist, författare och lektor i litterär gestaltning vid Göteborgs universitet, har under många år skrivit i gränslandet mellan skönlitteratur, essä och vetenskap.
