This exhibition brings together the work of seven Interface members, navigating their space in a landscape which is characterised by extensive areas of bog (peatland) and coastline, exposed to the unrelenting wind and rains moving in from the Atlantic.
We are delighted to present the work of seven artists from Interface on the West Coast of Ireland: Claire McLaughlin, Ceara Conway, Dolores Lyne, Jo Killalea, Kevin Griffen Noelle Gallagher and Sarah Ellen Lundy.
Interface is an artist-led not-for-profit studio and arts programme founded and directed by Galleri Duerr artist Alannah Robins. Since its foundation in 2017, the organisation has quickly established itself as a pioneer in working at the intersections of art and ecology. Through the curation and production of a rich programme of exhibitions and residencies, the organisation has built a warm and dynamic community of artists in a region of scant resources and infrastructure. At the core of its ethos is building sustainable paths for artists to develop their practice and to build collaborative relationships with other artists, ecologists and scientists, developing and redefining our relationship with land and sea.
All this happens in a former salmon hatchery, now a centre of scientific research, in a remote glacial valley in Connemara.
This exhibition brings together the work of seven Interface members, navigating their space in a landscape which is characterised by extensive areas of bog (peatland) and coastline, exposed to the unrelenting wind and rains moving in from the Atlantic.
The works in the exhibition explore this relationship to place through paint, film, photo, etching and sculpture, and through a range of lenses, historical and economic, emotional and poetic. The peatland and the midden are examined as repositories of memory and traces of land use. The industrialised forest is contrasted with the tiny residual fragments of ‘untouched’ ancient oak forest. Somatic grief and physicality of space and object are explored through colour, form, line and sound.
Curated by Alannah Robins, this exhibition is supported by Culture Ireland as part of the EU Council presidency programme.
